Galvanized iron pipes (G.I. Pipes) are widely used in industry, domestic  water  supply  lines and  in  many  other  construction purposes.  These pipes play a key role in water supply to the houses. As per requirements they are obtained in  various  sizes and wall  thickness. They are in such versatile use that they can be seen  easily every where in industry and residential  areas. They are made of mild steel in general and galvanized to protect from corrosion  and soil attack because of their best reasonable cost  and long life, they are most popular. Various methods of pipe Mfg. are employed in pipes &  tubes industries.  The choice, mainly, depends upon the size (diameter) of pipes regd. Smaller  sizes are  preferably  manufactured by extrusion of  ERW techniques  while  large & medium sizes by welding  formed steel plate  or strips. The  electric arc furnace melting of metal  has become   very popular in India in recent days.  The major  reason being  that  all sizes  of scraps can be  economically  used  for melting.  Graphite electrodes are used to strike an  are  between two electrodes or an electrode  and  scrap.   Where  the arc   is  struck  between  two electrodes the process is termed as indirect arc process and when it  is between the metal & the electrode, it is  termed as  direct arc process.  However, the  most  favorable point with Electric arc furnace  is that these are available in a wide  range of  sizes  & capacities (say from less than 1 ton  to over  60  tonnes  capacity). Thus,  this  process  can  suit  the industries  of  all   scales  with  economy   and  profitability.  Thus, on one hand the user of these furnaces  can  use  cheap raw materials  which  are  iron  wastes evailable in plenty which are iron wastes available in plenty and on the other, it proves to be suitable  for  all  economic levels  of  production.    Also  the quality control by  process  control  is easily achievable.  Form all  these  techno commercial reasons, it has  been  advised  arc process  of melting before extrusion of iron pipes to be  finally galvanised.
