Starch based adhesives are the most important vegetable adhesives. The most simple of these may be made by boiling flour with water, white modern starch adhesives are based on starch and its degradation production. The resulting adhesive is modified by incorporting borax, resins, alkali, inorganic salts, plasticizers etc. to obtain certain desirable properties. The degradation products of starch may be classified into following three categories, which are used for making adhesives: 1. Acid modified starches or thin boiling starches. 2. Oxidised starches. 3. Dextrins. Dried starch or starch in the process of drying, when subjected to the action of heat and/or acid and alkali treatment yields Guar gums or gums varying in their physical and chemical properties and characteristics. These are intermediate between starch, syrups and sugar. Many grades of Guar gums are made from starch varying in their physical and chemical characteristics from pure Guar gumes to some partially converted to other which still contain a percentage of unconverted starch. Since Guar gums are produced after treatment given to starch, it is also known as one of the modified starches. Modified starches comprise as that in their dried finished state on subsequent dispersion as a gel or in paste form yield products of varied chemical and physical characteristics. The so-called alkali or Ph adjusted starches yield thick bodies starches, while those subjected to treatment with dilute acids below the bursting or pasting point of the granule yield thin bodied low viscosity starches.
