Magnesium Carbonate, Magnesium Metal & Calcium Carbonate From Dolomite
Magnesium does not occur free in nature but its compounds are widely distributed. Its important minerals are Magnesite Mg Co3; Dolomite Mg Co3. CaCo3; Carnallite, Kcl.Mg Cl2 6H2o Asbestos, Ca Mg3(SiO3)4. Magnesium carbonate occurs in nature  as magnesite and in another form in association with calcium carbonate as dolomite. The natural product as magnesite is too  impure for direct use in industry. Technical carbonate is prepared from magnesite or dolomite by calcining in rotary kilns, slaking  the calcine and then carbonates is carried out (with scrubbed flue gases) at as low a temperature as possible and under a  pressure of 75 P.S.I. The resulting mixture contains magnesium bicarbonate in solution and calcium carbonate and other impurities in suspension. The solution is separated, filtered and treated with live steam to separate the basic carbonate since the solubility of calcium carbonate is very low under the conditions employed for carbonation, a product of high purity (MgCo3, 99% or more) is obtained. The term dolomite is referred to commercially as rocks containing the minerals dolomite, calcite and magnesite. On heating dolomite loses carbon dioxide with an increase in volume. It is therefore calcined at 1500oC to convert it into a more stable form for use in the manufacture of refractories.
