Blowing Agents

A blowing agent may be defined as a compound, organic or inorganic, that releases a gas when heated to a definite minimum temperature. It is infact, the decomposition temperature which determines the usefulness of a blowing agent, many different and diverse materials, have been used for blowing agents, ranging from the domestic product backing powder to materials. However in case or rubber under well defined condition, blowing agents liberate gases giving expended closed cell or open cell structure rubber product. The most commonly used inorganic blowing agent in sodium bicarbonate, though ammonium carbonate and bicarbonate are still in use. These liberate CO2 and yield an open hore structure. Ammonium Carbonates are of the earlist blowing agents used for production or sponege rubber and is still used for toilet sponge. Sodium bicarbonate is still quite popular because of its low cost compared to organic blowing agents. It is used in quantities upto 10% a high close of stearic acid is normally used to facility decomposition of the bicarbonate before the curing starts, in the production of open cell sponge rubber.
