Caustic soda, also known as sodium hydroxide (NaoH) is an important industrial chemical product produced on a tonnage basis in both solid and liquid form. It is deliquescent, absorbing water vapour and carbon dioxide from the air. It is also extremely corrosive and should be handled with great care. Adequate protection from body contact with the solid form or concentrated solutions should be provided. It is also a fire hazard compound as it heats spontaneously and may ignite combustible materials that are nearby. A large part of the huge amount used annually is produced by the electrolysis of the sodium chloride solutions in the electro-lytic cells, such as the Kellner-solvay Mercury cell, Hoaxer, Nelson, Force or Allen-Moore. Hydrogen and Chlorine are by product of the reaction. Caustic soda is the basic inorganic chemical on which depends the development of a large number of chemical industries. Caustic soda is a very versatile chemical during to its uses in multifarious industries viz paper, soap & detergent, Petroleum refining, rayon & other textiles, laboratory, reagent etching & electroplating, chemical manufacture, vegetable oil refining, etc. In the process for production of caustic soda by electrolytic process in an electro chemical cell, feedstock viz brine solution is transported to the electrode/electrolyte interface.
