Three hundred kilograms of water per kilogram of paper was the typical figure which the old paper maker had in his mind, when counter plating an increase of his production capacity. It is an impressive figure which, although how largely obsolute, illustrates the most plainly visible practical relationship between cellulose and water in paper making, namely the geographical one. Paper or board mills (and pulp mills) traditionally exist only in the vicinity of an adequate supply of usable water. The first task of water is to act as a dispersing agent for the fibres and to carry them to the paper machine. It is suited for this task because of its abundance and because of the hydrophilic nature of cellulose fibres which have themselves grown in water. At the end of the process, the role of water is more specific. It pulls and, atleast partly, holds the fibres together in the web and it can do this because it shares with cellulose the property of possessing hydroxyl groups. In between, the interaction between fibres and water assumes various modes as the suspensions turns in into a web and the web moves down the machine. Water may this "be regarded as the amniotic fluid of paper", as goring recently observed. It continues, during the entire existence of the paper, to exert its influence as it effects or even controls, its behaviour in numerous cases of conversion and usage.
