Eugenol From Clove And Clove Oil

Clove are aromatic, stimulant and carminative, used for dyspepsia and gastric irritation.Chief value of cloves lies in their essential oil content. Essential oil called clove oil, is extensively used for flavouring food products and fermented beverages. Clove oil is employed as a local analgesic for hypersensitive clentines and curious cavities. It is also used externally as a rebefacient and counter-irritant and internally as a carminative and antispasmodic. Clove stem and leaf oils are valued mainly for their eugenol content. Stems and dried buds are often distilled gogether to obtain as oil known in trade as vanillin clove oil. Clove oil is the natural occurring essential oil and it contains 95% eugenol and 5% iso-eugenol. Though eugenol can be prepared synthetically from gyaiacol-o-carboxylic acid etc. But it is mostly prepared from essential oils containing eugenol such as clove oil. The characteristic spicy odour of cloves is due to its essential oil which contains 80-95% eugenol. Clove oil is frequently used instead of pure eugenol to give desired spicyness in perfume compositions. The clove oil constituents in eugenol and iso-eugenol both have an odour strongly reminiscent of carnations and therefore, form the basis of carnation type perfumes.
