Product Description

Project Report On Extraction Of Apricot Oil (CHULLI)

Apricot  stones/seeds otherwise thrown as a waste  were  utilized for  extraction  of  oil  for  both  edible  and   pharmaceutical purposes. Apricot fruits containing 11.7-22.2% stones with  about 32%  kernels  give  an  oil  yield  of  46.1-47.2%.  The  use  of mechanical decorticator was found appropriate with  decortication capacity of 120-139 kg/h against manual crushing of only  3.8-4.5 kg/h.  Specific gravity separation method consisting  of  dipping decorticated  shells  and kernels in 25% salt solution was  found optimum for separation of kernels. The use of table oil  expeller with  an  oil yield of 38-40% and filtration through  oil  filter press  was  optimized.  Packaging of oil  containing  0.02%  TBHQ (tertiary  butyl  hydroquinone) in amber  coloured  plastic/glass bottles  was found most appropriate. The quality of  apricot  oil for  iodine  value (100.3-111.5  gl/100g),  saponification  value (190.6-193.5  mg  KOH/g (potassium hydroxide/g)  and  acid  value (2.58-4.31 mg KOH/g) was  well within the minimum  specifications of  PFA  (Prevention of Food Adulteration Act)  for  almond  oil. Owing to the presence of essential fatty acids (linoleic (27.76%) and  linolenic  acid  (1.42%)) and vitamin E  (430-438  pg/g)  in appreciable  proportion, the oil possessed good  nutritional  and pharmaceutical significance. On the basis of standardized  method for  oil   extraction,  four  oil  extraction  units  have   been established  in  apricot growing areas of  Himachal  Pradesh  for technology  demonstration and providing service to  the  farmers. The cost of production including 20% profit margins works out  to be Rs. 288 per kg oil however the market price of the oil is  Rs. 300 per kg oil. Thus, the method of oil extraction appears to  be quite cost effective for its adoption at cottage scale.
