Project Report on Methyl Chloride

Methyl Chloride (Chloromethane Monochloromethane) CH3Cl at ordinary temperatures and pressures is a colourless gas with an ethereal nonirritant odor and sweet taste. Methyl  Chloride  is handled commercially as liquid. It is miscible with the principal organic  solvents  and only slightly soluble in water.  The  dry liquid  is  stable and non-corrosive.However in the  presence  of moisture  the liquid slowly decomposes and becomes  corrosive  to metals  particulary aluminium zinc and magnesium. Gaseous  methyl chloride  is  moderately flammable. Prolonged  exposure  to  high concentration  of the vapour can produce severe toxic effect. In Europe,  methyl  chloride has been produced by the  treatment  of betaine  rich residual liquors from beet-sugar molasses  but  the process  does  not appear to be economical in the United  States Originally  methyl  chlorides  was  used  almost  entirely as a refrigerant  but  this  use has been largely  pre-empted  by  the chlorofluoromethanes.Then when butyl rubber came on the scene,its manufacture became the chief use of methyl chloride as a catalyst carrier  in low temperature polymerisation.
