Product Description

Project Report on NEEM OIL [EIRI-1716]

Neem oil is obtained from the seeds of neem tree also known as  margosa.  Which grows all over the country, concentrated in areas like U.P., Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. Utilization   of neem seeds is beset with  the  problem   of organization of systematic collection and crushing of seeds.  But with  the ever increasing exploitation of non edible oils for industrial and  pharmaceutical  purposes, neem  oil  is  gaining importance economically. The component glycosides of neem oil are primarily those of oleic (about 57%).  Stearic (about 15%) and palmitic (about 16%) aids together with small amounts of linoleic acids.  Apart  from these,  there  are non-fatty components described  as  "total  Bi Hers"  which  are mixture of complex per penoids in  soluble   in fats   and  hexane  and  "odorous  compounds"  which   are   also constituted of complex terepenoids, which however are soluble  in fats  and  hexane.   In fact it is these constituents that characterize this oil and are responsible for its  pharmaceutical properties.  The neem oil is soluble in ether  chloroform  and carbon tetrachloride. Neem  oil  is  acrid, yellow, bitter in  taste,  and  has  a disagreeable  garlic  like odour.  It has pungent odour.   It is colourless clear liquid.  The residue of neem obtained by steam distillation contains a bacteriostatic bactericidal  substance identified as allyl disulfide oxide. The  neem tree grows wild in the dry forests of  the  Deccan and  in the open scrub forests of the dry zone of Burma.   It  is cultivated all over India and Burma but thrives best in the drier climate of the north western parts, where normal rainfall  varies from 18-45 inches and maximum shade temperature may be as high as 120  deg.  F.  It grows on all kinds of soils but grows well  on black  cotton soil.  It is well suited for afforestation in dry situations and is a common avenue tree.
